For more than a decade Joel has explored the Creole world of South Louisiana through the lens of his large format 5x7 view camera. He also uses a hand held 35mm camera to make quick studies not intended for the final exhibition. Both sets of pictures can be seen here.

Le Monde Créole culminated in June 2007 with a major exhibition at the Fresno Art Museumand then traveled to the Centro Fotografico Manuel Alvarez Bravo for an exhibition in January 2008. The feature length documentary film Bayou Blues: A Photographer's Journey in South Louisiana is currently in postproduction.
